Crippling self-doubt

How do you feel when things change? Do you embrace challenges and uncertainty, or do you resist them? For many, change can feel scary, while others seem to ride the wave and even enjoy it. So, what distinguishes these two responses? There are a few possible answers, but one of the most striking factors is self-doubt. Questions like, “Will I do well enough when things shift?”, “Am I capable of adapting to new circumstances?”, or “How will I cope when everything changes?” often linger in the minds of those who struggle with change. Luckily, there are ways to remove this doubt, cultivate a growth mindset and develop confidence and adaptability.

Growth mindset and change resilience are intertwined: developing a growth mindset helps thrive in any circumstances, including change.

The only way is forward

“Things can only move forward; there’s no going back.” “What’s done is done, and change is inevitable.” “Resisting it is simply a waste of energy.” “Often, we do not know where things are headed, and as circumstances shift, the outcomes of our actions can remain uncertain.“ How do these statements make you feel? Can you accept them as reality, or do you still cling to the belief that you have control over what’s happening?

If you accept how little control you actually have, what emotions arise? For some, it sparks panic; for others, a sense of peace. So, ask yourself: what is it that you truly control? What can you really influence? The truth is, we have far less control than we tend to believe. But we do have some control over what we focus on and how we approach things.

Focus on learning

Whatever is happening around you can be seen as an opportunity to learn—about yourself, the world, and your remarkable ability not only to cope but to grow. When in doubt, look back at your life and notice how many challenges you've already overcome. Think back five years—where were you then, and where are you now? Can you see how much you've grown?

Foster curiosity

Curiosity is the key to a growth mindset. When faced with uncertainty, avoid fixating on any specific outcome. Let go, and stay curious about what might happen. Reality will unfold in its own way, and if you trust that you'll be okay, you can observe it with an open mind. Sit back, watch, and notice how your body and mind begin to relax.
